If you are in Paris and need to buy a train ticket for your onward journey or for exploring France then there are a number of options. You can buy train tickets at any of the major train stations although these can often be reasonably busy and have long lines. There are also the yellow machines - although these are sometimes not the easiest to use and you need a chip credit card to use them (which you won't find out until you get to the end of your process and its time to pay).
A nicer option is the SNCF Boutique. The SNCF Boutiques are scattered all around Paris and will sell you train tickets to anywhere. It's not the place to buy your Metro or RER tickets, but if you want to head out of Paris then they can help you.
Often there will be someone who speaks English which can be helpful, but if you are intimidated by French, you can write down what you want beforehand. They will need to know where you want to depart from ("Depart") where you want to go to ("Arrivee"), the date you want to leave ("Aller le" or "date"), the time ("a partier de" or "temps"), and the number of people travelling ("Nombre de Passengers"). If you want to just go one way, you want "Aller Simple" if its return you will need "Aller-Retour" and provide the above information for your return journey.
Here is a list of SNCF boutiques in Paris. The postcode tells you which one is closest to you - 75 is Paris, the last two digets tell you which arrondisement it is in (ie 75016 is in the 16th). Most are open Monday - Friday 9am - 6pm and many are open on Saturdays. Most are closed Sundays.

Hi. Nice information there! I have been booking my train tickets by SNCF through a booking plateform called www.centrale-reservations.com Here, i'm lucky to get english speeking operators who helped me out in booking a ticket. I'll equally try one of the boutiques; face to face contact changes the nature of one's conversation.
ReplyDeleteThis is true. The SNCF website (http://www.voyages-sncf.com/) makes booking tickets very easy. It is in French, but its pretty intuitive and you have the option of "print at home" or to pick up from the yellow kiosks at the train station.
